SWEATING EXCESSIVELY
Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) can be an embarrassing condition. Patients often complain that their clothing becomes soaked and stained with sweat. Those affected may even need to change their shirt several times daily.
With Primary Hyperhidrosis, the cause may be a loss of the normal regulation of the sweating process that tends to be genetic in nature. In these patients, their excessive sweating occurs regardless of their level of physical activity or the surrounding ambient temperature conditions.
Many therapies have been offered for this condition in the past including topical preparations, oral medications, iontophoresis and even surgery. Unfortunately, these older therapies have been associated with drawbacks.
Side effects associated with these treatments have included local irritation, blurred vision, inconvenience or even scarring.
More recently the use of neuromodulators, such as Botox®, have been utilized to treat this condition. Botox blocks nerve signals to the sweat glands, helping to shutdown the production of perspiration.
These innovative medications are injected locally, with minimal side effects. This therapy can provide long lasting relief from excessive sweating affecting the armpits and/or the hands. For those who suffer with excessive sweating in these areas, this treatment can be life changing!
